Colfax was platted and became a town in 1866, named after
Schuyler Colfax who later became Vice-President under Ulysses S. Grant.
The first industry was mining of coal. In 1875 mineral water was
discovered, thus the second industry with thousands of persons arriving to
enjoy the benefits of the water. Hotels were built, and Colfax was
called "little Carlsbad" until the water ceased to flow. At the
present time there is an ongoing effort to again establish the mineral
water industry, which made Colfax famous world-wide.
Today's population is 2,500 friendly people enjoying the
small-town atmosphere. Affordable housing is available in the form
of single-family dwellings, apartment buildings, Senior Citizen housing,
and low-rent apartments.
